Brazil Activates Protocols Over Two Possible Ebola Cases in São Paulo and Rio

Brazil activated epidemiological surveillance mechanisms and preventive protocols after detecting two suspected Ebola cases in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
Authorities are investigating patients arriving from Africa with viral symptoms to rule out the presence of the virus.
In São Paulo, the case involves a 37-year-old man who arrived from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country that declared a new Ebola outbreak on May 15.
The patient presented with fever and was transferred to a specialized unit to remain under observation and preventive isolation while tests continue.
Rio de Janeiro Investigates Case Linked to Uganda
In a separate procedure, the Rio de Janeiro Health Department confirmed the activation of health monitoring measures for a patient arriving from Uganda.
The man presented symptoms such as cough, chills, and diarrhea, raising medical alerts because of the international context of the outbreak in Central Africa.

Rio City Hall reported that the patient tested positive for malaria, although authorities are continuing the investigation to rule out other infectious diseases.
Both cases remain under clinical monitoring while final laboratory results are obtained to confirm or rule out the presence of the Ebola virus.
Outbreak in Africa Keeps International Alert Active
The Democratic Republic of Congo confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in May, prompting several countries to strengthen health surveillance.
In addition, the World Health Organization issued an alert over new infections and reinforced controls at airports and medical centers.
According to the most recent report released by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 1,000 suspected cases and 246 deaths associated with the outbreak have been recorded.
Uganda, a neighboring country of the Democratic Republic of Congo, also reported the presence of the virus, expanding regional concern and strengthening early detection systems in Latin America.

Despite activating protocols, Brazilian authorities said the risk of the virus entering and spreading remains low.
